Recently holidayed in Koh Tao and it’s got to be one of the most amazing places in Thailand. Koh Tao is really popular for diving but its rapidly becoming a popular destination for numerous reasons. I went there because, yes I wanted to do some diving but I had also heard it was a great place to holiday and chill.
My dive experience was brilliant and I got a lot out of it. Amazingly clear water, great instructors and breathtaking sea life. What made the experience really special was spending time in Koh Tao. The type of tourist it attracts are much more laid back than other parts of Thailand I have visited. The vibe was perfect for me so I decided to stay and holiday there long after my dive course had finished.
There are lots of foreign people who have businesses there. I presume they travelled went there and fell in loved as I did and stayed. On one side of the island you have the dive schools and that side of the island also has lots of great restaurants, bars and night life. The night life is great but no full on full moon party type crowds there.
The other side of the island is quiet and relaxing with numerous resorts that take in the islands natural beauty. There are some great small beaches that you can visit that are quiet and well maintained but there is a small entrance fee to get to some of these. I hired a bike and explored the whole island and although it’s small it has a big enough variety of things to do to keep me interested.
One of my passions is yoga, yes I am that chilled out hippy type. As I was going to stay for a while I decided to seek out some yoga classes. I found three studios offering classes. On the main strip set in one of the resorts I found Shambala yoga studio, great Shala for doing yoga and really good energy in the class I went to. My next excursion was to OceanSound studio which, was in a bit of a chaotic location but I really enjoyed the class none the less.
The last place I found was on the quiet side of the island at Baan Talay Resort. The Shala there is amazing set over the sea with awesome views. The class was excellent with great energy and I went back there again a few days later to get another fix of yoga. Surprised there is not more of a yoga scene in Koh Tao as the natural beauty and chilled atmosphere is perfect for yoga.
